Shaping tomorrow's tech generation: ORTEC CEE at the Innovation Labs 2017 Hackathon, Bucharest
On the 4th & 5th of March, the Politehnica University of Bucharest (UPB) hosted the Innovation Labs 2017 Hackathon, a go-to event for young tech founders and startups where they join forces to create new products from scratch. Our experts (Serghei Radjabov, Szabolcs Balazs and Alex Popescu) participated in the event as mentors, sharing their expertise with tomorrow’s tech generation of Romania.
A total of 62 teams introduced their innovation concepts for electric driving, face recognition, smart cities, vertical framing, wearables and others. The 41 best teams were selected by the audience and the jury . They were guided by mentors from the IT&C and business industry (including ORTEC’s specialists) and had to build practical prototypes. In the end, 24 teams were qualified for a 3-month-long mentoring program, aimed at realizing their ideas through user testing, design work, business modeling and product validation in weekly courses and workshops. The final presentations will take place in May.
As Herman Wierenga, Managing Director of ORTEC Central & Eastern Europe, said: “In Romania, the IT sector is leading with great professionals and with an incredibly well performing internet highway. In the current IT market, it is important to take the next step from outsourcing destination to developing own products. There is a lot of expertise and knowledge, there are plenty of entrepreneurs, many opportunities and good, successful examples. I think the role of universities is important and could be even bigger and strong scientific research could be an engine for innovation.”
ORTEC CEE, an active player in the Romanian tech market, is developing its collaboration with universities, particularly with the Faculty of Automatic Control and Computer Science (UPB), the initiator of Innovation Labs. As one of the world’s leaders in optimization software and analytics solutions, ORTEC is always looking to work with top graduates, support education with best practices and provide a solid platform for research & development.
