Perfecting the Art of Workforce Scheduling

The Rijksmuseum is a Dutch national museum dedicated to arts and history. Located in Amsterdam, the museum is home to Golden Age masterpieces like Rembrandt’s famous “Nachtwacht” and “The Milkmaid” by Johannes Vermeer. Millions of people line up to see these wonderful works of art every year. The museum has seen more than 10 million visitors since it reopened its doors post-renovation in 2013.

A diverse workforce

The Rijksmuseum employs a large and diverse workforce to meet visitors’ needs. It needs staff for the restaurant, the museum itself, its ticket and service desks, as well as the wardrobe service. Until recently, the organization had been creating workforce schedules using spreadsheets. But this was very inconvenient for such a large operation. It was also difficult to account for seasonality and its impact on expected visitor numbers.

Harmonizing planning

The museum sought out a partner to implement a more automated and efficient process for workforce scheduling. They chose ORTEC Workforce Scheduling for this task. Our advanced planning system allows them to optimize their staff schedule in high and low season thanks to improved forecasting. The solution enables them to identify the ideal type of employment contract for workers and is integrated with a biometric time clocking system for efficient payroll processing.

With ORTEC Workforce Scheduling, the Rijksmuseum enjoys a more streamlined planning system that reduced stress for employees. They no longer need spreadsheets to create their schedule and have exactly the right staffing levels to welcome hundreds of art lovers every day.
