We have all seen the tremendous value of data analytics on the success of commercial organizations. Now, how about humanitarian and societal challenges? As one of the founders of the Analytics for a Better World Institute, ORTEC believes that analytics can also contribute to solving major challenges facing humanity - from hunger to deforestation and the extinction of flora and fauna, among others. For our ‘Jointly for Social Impact’ series, we sat down with various nonprofit partners to hear from them how data analytics contributes to a better world. Below you'll find a recap of this series, highlighting the impact stories of Analytics for a Better World, Amref, 510/Red Cross, The Ocean Cleanup, and Force For Nature.
Data analytics to save lives? Reduce hunger? Combat climate change? Analytics for a Better World (also known as ABW) enables social good, sustainable development and humanitarian aid organizations to scale up the use of analytics, by educating and helping them build strategic roadmaps to grow their analytics capability, carrying out analytics projects and developing new analytics applications and techniques related to the SDGs. As one of ABW's founders, ORTEC is proud to pursue their special mission: applying analytics together with non-profit organizations, researchers and companies to make an impact on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

By converting data into understanding, 510 support numerous National Societies to better prepare for and cope with disasters and crises. It's their purpose to improve the speed, quality, and cost-effectiveness of humanitarian aid by using data and digital products.
To find out how data-mature the different National Societies are and to discover their desired state of data maturity, Analytics for a Better World, ORTEC, and 510 developed the groundwork for an analytical model. So far, the Data Maturity Model has been used by over 45 National Societies globally, showcasing its widespread impact.
Biodiversity is declining significantly. In the past 50 years, wildlife populations have declined by 69%. Meanwhile, rangers around the world do their best to protect nature. Today, we protect about 20% of the planet, thanks to 285.000 rangers. Analytics for a Better World and ORTEC support Force For Nature to achieve their 2030 ambitions: having 1.5 million well-trained and well-equipped rangers, so we can effectively protect 30% of the planet.
Together with Analytics for a Better World, we created the Force For Nature app for rangers, supporting them to do their important work more effectively. The results of the app are encouraging and show how rangers worldwide can do their work more effectively rather than all being limited to their own regions.
Thanks to data analytics, AMREF Health Africa - Africa's leading health NGO - can increase their impact on the people in need. It empowers them to effectively tackle critical health challenges and improve healthcare services.
To provide change for various counties in Kenya, Amref needed a simpler way to visualize complex data. A collaboration between Analytics for a Better World and ORTEC resulted in the Community Health Analytics Dashboard. This dashboard facilitates data-driven decision-making, while improving data accessibility, identifying key insights, and enabling targeted interventions.
Every year, millions of tons of plastic enter the oceans. This poses significant global environmental, economic, and health challenges. It's The Ocean Cleanup’s mission to eliminate 90% of plastics floating in the oceans by 2040.
Through Analytics for a Better World, ORTEC supports this mission by making a model that simulates the effect on costs for different scenarios for future operations, while incorporating operational limitations. This helps in making strategic decisions for scaling up the operation.
