About the contest

Every year, the Benelux Algorithm Programming Contest (BAPC) is held in two versions: a student pool and a company pool. During this contest, teams from different companies and leading universities in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg are served a series of algorithmic problems. Those should be solved by writing a computer program that can read the problem input and provide the correct answer. The goal is to solve most problems within a set time limit. Altogether, this happens in less than five hours on a single computer.

Below a photo of ORTEC participants from both teams. From left to right: Wouter Kool, Bas den Heijer, Pim Agterberg, Bas te Kolste, Rolf Plagmeijer, and Kamiel Cornelissen.

Our way to victory

This year’s contest took place at the end of October and was hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology. With two different teams, ORTEC joined the company pool. By solving 10 out of 12 complex problems, one of the two ORTEC teams won first place, beating other strong company teams. The other ORTEC-team won fifth place. Kamiel Cornelissen, one of ORTEC’s participants, reflects: “After a not so smooth start we picked up steam to win convincingly in the end. We are very excited to win the BAPC again.”

This is the 8th year that ORTEC joins the contest.

  • → In 2020, ORTEC won third place;
  • → In 2021, ORTEC won second place;
  • → And this year (2022), ORTEC got victory in the company pool by winning first place.

Next: a mathematical competition

In January 2023, there’s another competition that ORTEC participates in every year: the Dutch Mathematical Olympiad for Businesses. At ORTEC, we proudly look back on our participation this year - winning first and third place - and are excited to join the competition in a few months again.
