Dustin

“I studied Computer Science in Delft. After my graduation an intermediary brought me into contact with several companies and organizations. Small and large, profit and non-profit. ORTEC stood out for several reasons. First of all because of the challenges that you encounter here. As an engineer you want to work on complex and high-impact projects. That can be done here. In addition, ORTEC is a big company and you are not seconded to customers. I like that. The traineeship made it even more attractive."

Dustin is a trainee software engineer. He is almost halfway into his traineeship.

“The beauty of this traineeship is that you can try different things. You are given the chance to sample several projects and disciplines. In that way you discover where your passion really lies. My manager supports me in that. Every two weeks I speak with him about my progress. About what I like and do not like and what I could still discover. Besides, I regularly have meetings with other trainees. It is great fun to share experiences with them.”

“During my first project I was on the team that made adjustments on the standard software that ORTEC supplies. Now I am working on custom-made software for some large customers, including Albert Heijn. For this customer we are developing software that assists the delivery service of the company to further automate the timeslot for a delivery and to make the delivery routes more efficient. From code to framework: everything in this project was new to me. It was the first time that I worked on back-end web development. I learn lots of new things that way.”

“My specialization at the university was Software Engineering. Such a study is very academic. In those days I analyzed software, at ORTEC I build software. So there is a big difference between that study and my current work. One legacy from my study is that I am not daunted by complex problems. I have learned to achieve results from a problem or an objective without a step-by-step plan. That was useful for academic problems but also for my work now. “

“To me mathematics was always a necessary evil. It may seem strange that I chose a company where mathematics is so important. Nevertheless I can really do my thing here. Colleagues devote themselves to the algorithms, to the mathematical side. I am more devoted to the software side.”
