Ocean transportation, in specific heavy lift shipping and offshore transport and installation is an industry in which players compete fiercely with each other on both price and service levels.
This also happens to be the challenge heavy lift shipping and offshore transport and installation company Jumbo Maritime is facing. The company, specialized in heavy lift transport and offshore transportation and installation, is extremely driven to be best-in-class in the market in which they operate.
A data-driven approach seems to be the solution, and both the concept and the term have caught on at Jumbo Maritime. As with many other companies, responsibilities at Jumbo tend to be divided across the various departments.
This often restricts the number of ways used to exchange data and information – which just so happens to be a vital element when it comes to transforming into a data-driven organization.
The lack of what is known as a “single-source-of-truth” and standardized processes that are seamlessly integrated, caused people to often spend a large amount of time on internal coordination and trying to work out what data and information to exchange.
Jumbo Maritime is better off spending this time on optimizing its sailing schedules and finding new business opportunities. In co-creating a Smart Scheduling solution, Jumbo Maritime and ORTEC joined forces to take a major step towards building a data-driven organization.
In order to support Jumbo Maritime in its quest for more data-driven decision-making, ORTEC helped them create a digital roadmap. We soon developed a proof-of-concept through an Agile approach. And this beta version immediately demonstrated the added value of the process we had embarked on together.
The eventual Smart Scheduling solution results in more accurate price estimates of transportation, proposals for combined loads, and journeys that ensure maximum efficiency. In order to minimize operational costs, Smart Scheduling helps to optimize sailing speeds, based on the loading and unloading windows. Additionally, Jumbo Maritime can more rapidly access all these insights and decisions. This pays off in terms of time savings, which Jumbo can then use for the quest for new opportunities and optimal services.
Making our expertise available to an organization in the form of advice, projects, and implementations is the basis of our operations. As both businesses and our society at large will only experience a lasting impact if they use and truly embrace a data-driven approach, we don’t believe our work ends here.
In order to also increase our footprint in this area, we helped Jumbo to create an analytics roadmap, advised them on the use of digital resources in their organization and supported them in their search for data professionals.
This is just one of the many ways in which we help to create lasting change. This is what it’s all about for us: improving the world of ocean transportation through our passion for math!
