BAM Energy & Water: Automating engineer planning for EV charging

BAM Energy & Water

BAM Energy & Water builds underground infrastructure for water and energy. As demand for EV charging grew, planning for a limited pool of specialized engineers became complex and manual. With ORTEC Field Service, they automate and run their field service planning.

The challenge: planning scarce specialized engineers

BAM Energy & Water's EV desk installs and maintains charging stations for municipalities, fast-charging sites, and underground car parks. Planning these specialized engineers was manual and time-consuming, with little room for flexibility. BAM wanted to plan a scarce resource right the first time and give customers insight into, and a say in, the schedule.

Created value: continuous, automated scheduling

A key requirement was that automated planning could be added as a tool inside the EV desk's existing Mendix platform, DigiFlow, where ORTEC's planning logic now runs. The schedule shifted from weekly to continuous, so changes are far easier to make, and engineers' daily routes are optimized automatically against multiple factors. Customers can self-schedule appointments and view the overall schedule.

PROVEN RESULTS

Our impact in Field Service in numbers

0%

less travel distance

Smarter routing means technicians start fewer days driving further than they need to — and finish more of them having done productive work.

0%

missed appointments

From 40% to 4% fewer missed appointments, meaning less cost, less customer friction, and fewer reactive conversations your team has to manage after the fact.

Greater predictability across the chain

Beyond time savings, BAM points to predictability as the biggest gain: the process from preparation to delivery has become easier to forecast. The system gives continuous insight into the schedule and the flexibility to adjust, getting the right engineer to the right place each day.

Maurits van Olst

We’re especially pleased with how automation and optimization have improved predictability throughout the chain. The entire process has simply become easier to predict, from preparation to delivery. What we expect to happen now actually happens.

The benefits: Flexible, predictable planning

Automating the EV desk's planning gave BAM a continuous, flexible schedule and clearer predictability across the process.

  • Significant time saved for planners and engineers

  • Continuous scheduling that makes changes easy

  • Optimized engineer routes

  • Greater predictability from preparation to delivery

  • Customer self-scheduling and visibility of the schedule

Roy Kat

The daily routes of our engineers are now determined by algorithms that take multiple factors into consideration, and our engineers - who now get to sleep in for an extra 30 minutes - couldn’t be more pleased. Another great feature is that customers can self-schedule appointments and view the overall schedule, which gives everyone involved more peace of mind.
