Job description

As a Software Engineer within ORTEC Data Science & Consulting (DS&C), you will be part of our Software Development Services (SDS) team, working at the intersection of technology and consultancy. In this role, you’ll design, build, and enhance cloud-native solutions that have a tangible impact on the daily operations of our customers. Your work will span multiple projects and industries, collaborating closely with talented ORTEC engineers, data scientists, architects, and consultants. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute both from within our own teams and directly at client sites, experiencing a wide variety of domains, steep learning curves, and the chance to deliver production-grade systems used by organizations worldwide.

In this hands-on engineering and consultancy role, you’ll combine technical problem-solving with translating functional needs into robust, scalable software. Our multidisciplinary teams operate in short iterations, value craftsmanship, and take full ownership of their work—from design all the way to running software in production, whether at ORTEC or directly for our clients.

What you will do

  • Design, build, and operate solutions using C#/.NET or Python on Microsoft Azure.
  • Contribute to cloud infrastructure through Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD practices.
  • Implement engineering best practices such as testing, security, and monitoring.
  • Collaborate with architects and product owners to clarify and refine requirements.
  • Enhance reliability and troubleshoot real-world issues in production environments.
  • Work in mixed ORTEC–client teams and adapt to different domains as needed.
  • Participate in projects involving Java applications; previous experience is helpful, but willingness to learn and contribute is key.

About ORTEC

ORTEC is a global leader in data‑driven decision support, optimization, and analytics. Within DS&C, we combine engineering excellence with deep optimization and AI capabilities to deliver long‑lasting value through reliable, scalable software systems.

Who are you

You are a hands‑on engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, learning new domains, and working in multidisciplinary teams. You’re comfortable working with cloud technologies, enjoy writing clean and maintainable code, and take pride in delivering solutions that work reliably in production.

You have:

  • 2–4 years of professional experience in software engineering.
  • Demonstrated expertise in C#/.NET development and working with Microsoft Azure cloud services.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code methodologies.
  • Strong proficiency in software design principles, automated testing practices, and version control using Git.
  • Excellent communication skills, with a proven ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of mathematical optimization (including implementing or integrating optimization solvers) and expertise with Machine Learning is desirable.
  • Full stack development experience is a strong plus, particularly with modern front-end technologies such as Angular or React.
  • Experience with Java is desirable.

What you can expect

You will work on systems that matter—business‑critical software used by clients in logistics, manufacturing, retail, energy, and more. At ORTEC, you join a group of smart, supportive colleagues who like building things together and helping each other grow.

From day one, we help you get up to speed with our products, development practices, and cloud environments. Your ideas are valued immediately, and you’ll have the freedom to propose smart improvements to both software and processes.

We invest in continuous learning:

  • Access to Udemy courses
  • Internal & external technical trainings
  • Knowledge sessions across ORTEC teams

The position can be based in Zoetermeer or Amsterdam and follows a hybrid working model, requiring presence on-site in Utrecht 1–2 days per week. Proficiency in Dutch is required.

What we offer

  • An open, friendly, and informal atmosphere with a strong emphasis on work-life balance.
  • A team of motivated colleagues who organize numerous enjoyable activities for employees.
  • Experience: Learn from day one while applying your knowledge in practice! We believe in your growth and provide the support and training necessary for your development.
  • A permanent position with a competitive salary.
  • An end-of-year bonus (13th month).
  • A mobility allowance of 3% of your gross monthly salary, covering commuting and business mileage (or the option of an NS Businesscard).
  • Pension contributions.
  • Holiday pay.
  • 25 vacation days, with additional days granted from age 35.
  • Compensation for private internet connection and a home working allowance.
  • A well-equipped workspace, including furniture and IT resources for remote work.

What to expect

We will help you to thrive in your field of expertise. We offer development programs, tailored to your individual needs and function requirements, including opportunities to attend courses and seminars. We offer challenging, practical hands-on experience with opportunities to work abroad. We operate in a flat organizational structure that keeps communication lines short. The atmosphere is open, informal, cooperative and positive. We employ over 1000 people in the Netherlands (HQ), Belgium, Germany, France, the U.K., Romania, Italy, the U.S., Australia, Brazil, Poland, Denmark and Singapore.
