ORTEC Brings AI-Driven Optimization to E-Grocery Delivery Operations

Sep 01, 2026

Advanced planning and real-time decision intelligence help retailers lower costs, improve service, and scale efficiently

ORTEC introduces new capabilities for e-grocery delivery operations through its ORTEC for Home Delivery (OHD) solution suite. The platform combines AI-driven optimization, advanced analytics, and integrated planning to help grocery retailers improve delivery performance, reduce costs, and scale in an increasingly complex last-mile environment.

As e-grocery demand continues to grow, retailers face increasing pressure to deliver faster and more reliably while managing rising transportation costs, demand volatility, and tight delivery windows. ORTEC addresses these challenges by embedding optimization directly into daily planning and execution, enabling teams to move from reactive decision-making to continuous, data-driven operations.

At the core of ORTEC’s e-grocery solution is dynamic allocation and time slot optimization that continuously adjusts decisions as new orders arrive. Rather than relying on static planning cycles, retailers can manage delivery operations as a continuous process, adapting throughout the day as demand and constraints evolve.

Retailers balance operational efficiency and customer experience by dynamically determining delivery and pickup time slots, assigning orders across owned fleets and gig networks, and adjusting routing, labor, and sourcing decisions in real time. Area and Time Slots management enables retailers to create differentiated delivery propositions for B2C, B2B, and other customer groups with distinct service level agreements, ensuring flexible delivery options while preserving capacity for priority customers.

Customer nudging further improves performance by guiding shoppers toward more efficient delivery windows through incentives, increasing slot utilization and reducing last-mile costs.

For store-based fulfillment models, ORTEC aligns picking capacity, time slot availability, and delivery area management. Forecasting models help ensure store-level resources match demand, unlocking additional sales by recommending picking capacity increase during weekday and hours where added demand is expected, supporting both service reliability and cost control.

ORTEC combines advanced optimization with machine learning to continuously improve planning accuracy and execution reliability. Models learn from historical on-time delivery performance and operational data, refining key inputs such as driving times, stop durations, and capacity assumptions so future plans become more robust under changing conditions.

Routing algorithms incorporate real-world traffic patterns and road network intelligence, while continuous optimization allows teams to respond immediately to new orders or disruptions without manual replanning. Process automation further reduces planning lead times and enables faster responses to last-minute changes.

Seamless integration with ERP, WMS, and transportation systems ensures that planning decisions translate directly into execution, reducing data silos and enabling faster operational responses. A driver mobile application supports execution with guided workflows and proof of delivery, while customers benefit from real-time ETA updates and proactive notifications when delays are expected, improving predictability and transparency.

ORTEC also supports sustainability initiatives through intelligent electric vehicle assignment. By predicting route-level energy requirements in advance, retailers can maximize EV utilization and avoid disruptions related to battery constraints.

Measurable Operational Impact

Retailers using ORTEC’s e-grocery solutions see:

  • Improved on-time delivery and first-attempt delivery success rates within committed time windows

  • Higher deliveries-per-hour productivity through optimized routing and slot utilization

  • Greater predictability through proactive customer communication on delays and updated ETAs

  • Increased availability of delivery time slots, including shorter lead times

  • Higher utilization of fleet, gig, and labor resources

  • Reduced transportation and fulfillment costs and lower emissions

“As e-grocery evolves, retailers need more than faster delivery. They need control over increasingly complex operations,” said George Ninikas, SVP Sales and Accounts at ORTEC. “Our solutions apply AI where it drives real outcomes, optimizing routes, capacity, and delivery schedules while accounting for real-world constraints. This allows retailers to build delivery operations that are more efficient, resilient, and ready to scale.”

Building on this foundation, ORTEC is evolving toward an agentic AI approach that embeds continuing intelligence and proactive decision support directly into workflows. Ninikas said, “OHD will increasingly support retail teams as a co-pilot and work partner, progressively enabling trusted automation for well-defined decisions as confidence grows.”

ORTEC’s e-grocery solution provides a scalable foundation for retailers balancing growth, customer experience, and profitability as the market continues to mature.
